Apparently I didn't hear about it as quickly as some people, but oh well! ;-)
I'm actually very happy they announced this, although I wouldn't be surprised if they add on an extra season when the ratings eventually return to their 1st season glory. It makes me angry that people are suggesting they are doing this to save face, when the producers/writers have always been very clear that the end of the series was inevitable, and very much pre-conceived. I cannot wait for the remainder of the 117 total episodes, *sigh*. only three more years of charlie and sayid!!! ahhhh, what's a girl to do?
random pop music tirade:
i'm really obsessed with avril's single "girlfriend" and if i'm being completely honest, i've always been an avril fan. her light, catchy pop certainly isn't groundbreaking, and her vocals aren't overly remarkable, and her faux-punk image is definitely nausating, but i was thinking about her the other day as i wasted time in the box by watching some old-school Britney videos, and it suddenly struck me why i've always been so drawn to avril:
she acts her age.
avril emerged on the mainstream music scene in 2002 with "complicated"... avril was 18 years old, singing about boyfriends who treat their girlfriends differently around their male friends. entirely appropriate for someone of high school age. she followed this up with the single "sk8r boi" that opens with the infamous lyrics "he was a boy, she was a girl, can i make it any more obvious?" she then goes on to describe a relationship between a punk rock boy and a preppy girl. definitely the stuff of adolescent conversations. on her sophmore album, at the ripe old age of 20, avril open with "don't tell me", a rather slow number about a boy trying to get some action before the speaker is ready. her next single "my happy ending" reflects the common angst of a 20-something realizing for the first time that the post-high school cinderella story isn't going to happen.
on her latest album, the 80's inspired go-go's tribute "girlfriend" is the perfect anthem for any early 20-something (avril is now 23) trying to get the man they want even if it means not playing fair.
compare this with the early singles of britney or jessica, or even my beloved christina. for example, at the tender age of 17, brit-brit was already declaring that she was "born to make you happy" and warning gentlemen about her dating tactics: "sometimes i run, sometimes i hide, sometimes i'm scard of you, but all i really want is to hold you tight, treat you right, be with you day and night".

well this turned out to be much longer than i intended, i'm just saying i love avril b/c she's not afraid to be young and sing about it. she doesn't need to pretend she's seen the world or experienced a lot, she's just singing about what people her age think about it.

"In a second you'll be wrapped around my finger
Cause I can, cause I can do it better
There's no other
So when's it gonna sink in
She's so stupid
What the hell were you thinking?"

omg avril should become a psychic... that is all i got to say. and then maybe she could tell us what is going to happen on lost, unless of course there's an '80s ending with jack waking up on the plane ... peanuts sir? ... it was all a dream... oh ya.
